US government sues Texas company for not hiring Sikh

According to Economic Times sources, a Texas company has been sued for religious discrimination. The company did not hire a Sikh who refused to shave his beard and take off his turban.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is seeking punitive damages for Sukhdev Singh Brar. He had applied for a job at the Champion National Security Firm in Richardson in October 2005.

Brar was asked to shave and take off his turban. He was promised to be hired only on this condition. He told the representative that whatever she was saying was against the federal law and his religion.

Brar was suggested to follow the rules and the company policy which necessitated him to do the same.

The government now wants the court to order the company to change its hiring policy.

A company attorney said they haven’t seen the lawsuit yet. But he says they don’t discriminate, and have a good track record of hiring a diverse workforce.
